'Stranger Things' have happened.... All the chartifacts you never knew you needed.

More Kate Bush More Kate Bush

Kate Bush has scored her second No.1 Single in Australia this week with "Running Up That Hill", 44 years and one week since her debut single last appeared at the top locally.

"Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)" becomes the 1113th No.1 Singles in Australia (1940 to 2022), the 548th for ARIA (1983 to 2022), the seventh No.1 for 2022 (and the third new No.1 for the year), the sixteenth No.1 for Warner (Brothers/Music) with it being the first for offshoot label Noble & Bright, while Warner last hit the top (directly) with "7 Years" for Lukas Graham (Feb. 2016).

Kate Bush first charted in Australia in April of 1978 with her debut single "Wuthering Heights", which logged three weeks at the top of the Kent/AMR charts from May 22nd, 1978 until June 5th, holding for three week at No.1, and now 44 years and one week later she lands her second chart-topping song in Australia, albeit with a 1985 issued single. And with such a gap between No.1's in Australia, she is now second on the listing for 'Gap between First and Latest No.1: Singles' edging in just behind last years crown-taker Elton John (45 years, 2 months), and now just ahead of Paul McCartney (43 years, eight months and 2 weeks).

"Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" has also hit No.1 this week in New Zealand, Lithuania and Sweden, all climbing to the top spot, while it jumps to No.2 in England, No.3 in Ireland, Hungary and The Netherlands, No.4 in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, No.6 in the Czech Republic and the song has returned at a new peak of No.8 in The U.S.A. (originally peaking at No.30 in 1985). Kate's rise to No.1 locally makes the song the fourth No.1 during 2022 by an English Act, while there were five in 2021, and none at all in 2020. Plus Kate Bush now becomes only the fourth out of 25 UK Solo Female Artists to score a second (or more) No.1 single in Australia, after Vera Lynn in the 1940's (six in total, the most), Petula Clark in the 1950's & 1960's (4 in total) and more recently Adele (3 in total). Overall this is now the 215th No.1 single by an English Act (solo male or female, duo or group). For the title of the new No.1 song, this is now the 17th 'Up' to appear at the top, the 18th 'That' and only the third for both the words 'Hill' and 'God', with the last deity at the top being Drake's "God's Plan" (11 weeks from Feb 5th, 2018), while we've had no previous 'Running' or 'Deal' at the top of the Australian Singles Chart.

The Harry Styles's track "As it Was" swaps places with Kate's 'Deal with God' this week, dropping down one spot to No.2 after seven broken weeks at the ARIA Singles summit, still the longest running No.1 for 2022, while the track is newly certified as 2x▲Platinum in sales (last certified on May 9th), and it's still at No.1 in England, Ireland (both 10th week at No.1), Canada (8th week) and The U.S.A. (5th overall week), while Harry also has a second Top 10 entry locally with "Late Night Talking", which drops down four places to land at No.9.

Another two songs which swap places with a single move are up next, as "First Class" for Jack Harlow rises back up one spot to No.3, pushing back down to No.4 the Lizzo track "About Damn Time", while she issued a new track on Friday called "Grrrls". The Kid Laroi's rescheduled-due-to-illness tour continues to push his singles back up within the Top 10, with his latest release "Thousand Miles'' (HP-4x2) and his long-running "Stay" with Justin Bieber both moving back up one spot each to No.5 and No.6 respectively. With "Stay" now the outright 'Second-Longest Running Top 10' single of all time at 47 weeks within the Top 10, while the song in first place at a new record of 70 weeks is a non-mover at No.8, Glass Animals with "Heat Waves''.

Scoring the highest new entry of the week in-between those two long-running entries is Post Malone who is joined by Doja Cat for the No.7 debut "I Like You (A Happier Song)", which is taken from his new album "Twelve Carat Toothache", which lands at No.2 on the ARIA Albums Chart this week, plus the albums second and recently issued song "Cooped Up" with Roddy Rich has jumped up thirteen places to land at No.10 this week, giving Post Malone his eleventh and twelfth Top 10 entries in Australia in the same week.

UP:

Elton John and Dua Lipa's "Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)" rises back up two spots to No.13, while Ed Sheeran climbs back up with both "Shivers" (17 to No.15) and on the Camila Cabello song "Bam Bam" (31 to No.23), while a remixed/redone version of his album track "2Step" featuring rapper Lil' Baby has leapt up eighteen places this week to land at a new peak of No.44 after seven weeks within the Top 100.

Not only does Doja Cat debut on the new Post Malone entry this week, she also charts with a song from the new Baz Luhrmann film 'Elvis'. which premiered in Australian cinemas this past week, with the soundtracks lead single being "Vegas", which leaps up a massive sixty-seven places to land at a new peak of No.17, giving her a ninth and tenth Top 20 placement in Australia in this week. The song samples the original Big Mama Thorton version of 'Hound Dog' which Elvis covered and was his sixth chart entry in Australia in November of 1956 (HP-17).

Jumping back into the Top 20 this week is Future with Drake and the track "Wait for U" (HP-12), rising back up six spots to No.18, while JB's "Ghost" flies back up five places to land at No.20. Tate McRae's album only dropped one place from last week's entry spot of No.10 to No.11 this week, while her single "She's All I Wanna Be" (HP-19) continues to climb back up, rising to No.24, while also rising, but back up into the Top 30 are; "Enemy" for Imagine Dragons (35 to No.27), "Save Your Tears" for The Weeknd (33 to No.28) and "Levitating" for Dua Lipa (34 to No.29).

With a slew of Harry tracks dropping down this week, older entries get a chance to rebound back up the charts, with eight of the ten tracks within the Top 40 rising back up; "Following the Sun" for SUPER-HI, "Industry Baby" by Lil' Nas X and "Good 4 U" (newly 6x▲Platinum) all move back up five places apiece to No.31, No.32 and No.33 respectively, followed by nine place rebounds by current tourist Kid Laroi and "Without You" (43 to No.34) and "Wait a Minute!" by Willow (44 to No.35), while Nas X' also rebounds with "That's What I Want" (42 to No.36), and scoring a new peak of No.38 by jumping up ten places from last week's entry spot of No.48 is Sleepy Hallow's "Die Young".

Elley Duhé's "Middle of the Night" is now ▲Platinum in sales and back up four spots to No.41, with the final sales cert going to The Killers' track "Mr. Brightside", which is up four to No.45 and now 14x▲Platinum. The new Post Malone album's debut at No.2 also helped pull the new set's first release back up the charts, as "One Right Now" with The Weeknd rebounds forty-one spots to land at No.42, with further Top 50 climbers being Lady Gaga's 'Top Gun: Maverick' theme "Hold My Hand" rising four spots to No.43 and J. Cole's "No Role Modelz" re-enters the Top 50, up four to No.49.

DOWN:

The two Top 10 dropouts this week fall into the Top 20, with "Big Energy" for Latto (HP-6x2, WI10-5a) down one spot to No.11 and Harry Styles drops down seven places with both "Matilda" (HP-3, WI10-2) to No.16 and "Music for a Sushi Restaurant" to No.19. Harry continues his slide down the charts with "Daylight" (14 to No.21), "Little Freak" (16 to No.25), "Satellite" (18 to No.37) and his eighth and final Top 50 entry this week is "Grapejuice" which plummets twenty-eight spots to No.47.

The other big drop for the week is "N95" for Kendrick Lamar, which tumbles down twenty-six spots to No.46, with Doja Cat's third and final Top 50 entry sees her "Woman" track drop two places to No.48.
