As midweek chart reports indicated, it was a tough battle for the top spot in the ARIA Albums listings this week. And, US hip hop star Eminem held off all newcomers, The Marshall Mathers LP 2 keeping the number one position for a second week.

The closest challenge came from fellow US performer Lady Gaga who sent her Artpop album in at number two. But locals Illy and Paul Kelly managed top five positions with their new releases. Melbourne hip hopper Illy placed his Cinematic set in at four (his highest charting album to date) while Paul Kelly's live recording of his collaborative tour with Neil Finn, Goin' Your Way, came in at five. The DVD format of the Kelly & Finn live set has entered the Music DVD Chart at number one though, managing to dislodge DVD mammoth Andre Rieu from the top.

With the album market cluttering up with new releases as Christmas approaches the ARIA chart is dotted with debuts. This week's new entries include: Love Me Back To Life - Celine Dion (nine); The Christmas Album - Human Nature (12); James Arthur's self-titled album (14); On Air: Live At The BBC Volume 2 - The Beatles (28); Direct Hits - The Killers (30); My Acoustic Diary - Adam Brand (31); A Musical Affair - Il Divo (40); This Is Christmas - Anthony Callea (60); Word Of Mouth - The Wanted (64); On Air: Live At The BBC - The Beatles (77); Fever In The Road - The Bamboos (80) - in the Digital Sales chart, The Bamboos came in at 41.

Also, Michael Buble's Christmas album makes a seasonal return at 19 - it was ARIA's fourth highest seller in 2012 and second highest seller in 2011. While Flume's self-titled former number one storms back up to seven from 62, having celebrated a year in the charts just last week.

In the Singles Chart, the two-week run of X Factor number ones ended with The Monster, Eminem's collab with Rihanna, taking the top spot (it becomes Eminem's eighth Australian number one). The UK's Ed Sheeran scored the highest new entry with I See Fire at ten. Local debuts came in the form of Tina Arena's Only Lonely at 34, Joel Fletcher's club hit Swing at 45 and Australia's Got Talent winner Uncle Jed's cover of Pink's Just Give Me A Reason at 49.
