Organisers have said that they and the police are "working nightshifts to take all necessary measures to guarantee a safe festival".

A terrorist threat has interrupted the Rock Am Ring music festival in Nürburg, Germany, with organisers asking attendees to evacuate on advice of police.

The festival's social media accounts have lit up with announcements and advice for punters on-site, who were asked early this morning (AEST) "to leave the festival site in a calm and controlled manner towards the exits and camping grounds" following the discovery of the threat.

In an update, organisers said that they and the police were "working nightshifts to take all necessary measures to guarantee a safe festival".

At this stage, organisers are hoping to resume the festival following the conclusion of police investigations into the threat, but have not yet confirmed that it will go ahead.

A press conference is expected to be held at 11am (7pm Saturday AEST) from the Ministry of the Interior of Rhineland-Palatinate with more information about the situation.

"We will inform you as soon as we have confirmed information about the possible continuation of the festival," they wrote. "Unfortunately we have to rely on external sources for [this] information. We all hope to rock on together tomorrow."

Police have established an information hotline for attendees.

According to Sky News, about 90,000 people are estimated to have been at the venue for the first night of the three-day event, which featured such acts on its line-up as headliners Rammstein, international heavyweights In Flames, Prophets Of Rage, Gojira and System Of A Down, and Aussie outfits Airbourne and The Living End.

The threat comes in the wake of the devastating attack in Manchester at the end of an Ariana Grande concert, which left 22 dead and several more injured. Grande is set to return to the city this weekend for an all-star benefit gig in aid of the victims.
