Empire Of The Sun Announce 2023 Aussie Shows

Empire Of The Sun have locked in a string of Aussie shows for next month, treating fans in Sydney and Brisbane to headline dates alongside an appearance at Melbourne’s Now & Again Festival.

Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore’s long-awaited return to the stage as Empire Of The Sun will mark their first shows in Australia since 2017.

The alt-electro pioneers will bring “larger-than-life live production” to Enmore Theatre in Sydney on February 22 and The Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane on February 25 after their performance at Now & Again on February 18.

Littlemore teased the duo’s return at the end of last year, hinting at shows and new music on an episode of The Plug podcast.

“Next year is going to be super exciting for Empire Of The Sun fans,” he said. “Luke and I are in such a beautiful space, and creatively everything is just flowing.”

It's been a while since Empire fans have heard new music. Excluding a previously unreleased track, Chrysalis, which coincided with a limited edition vinyl to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut LP, Walking On A Dream, the pair's last album came back in October 2016 with Two Vines.

In a November 2021 interview on The Plug with Neil Griffiths, Empire Of The Sun's Nick Littlemore gave an update on all things Empire, detailing new music and even revealing some lyrics from an unreleased track.

“There could totally be Empire stuff in the next year, for sure. I look forward to it,” Littlemore said.

He added, “I actually just found one of the lyrics the other day which we wrote in Japan. It’s such an exciting record, it’s super sad but in that way that Luke [Steele] makes you feel good about feeling sad; makes you feel good about feeling anything. He’s such an extraordinary artist.”

Littlemore goes on to share lyrics he wrote while sitting alone in Tokyo:

“Maybe I drink alone but maybe I drink with friends / I just don’t know; you know? / Maybe I feel too much but maybe I fall in love with love, not lust.”
