There may be hope of new music for Empire Of The Sun fans sooner than expected, with Nick Littlemore suggesting 2022 isn’t off the table.

Appearing on a recent episode of The Plug with Neil Griffiths, Littlemore gave an update on all things Empire, detailing new music and even revealing some lyrics from an unreleased track.

“There could totally be Empire stuff in the next year, for sure. I look forward to it,” Littlemore said.

The main issue at the moment is that Littlemore hasn’t seen Luke Steele “since COVID or a fair while prior to COVID”.

“He’s been doing other stuff, but there’s some really exciting music,” Littlemore added.

“I actually just found one of the lyrics the other day which we wrote in Japan. It’s such an exciting record, it’s super sad but in that way that Luke makes you feel good about feeling sad; makes you feel good about feeling anything. He’s such an extraordinary artist.”

Littlemore goes on to share lyrics he wrote while sitting alone in Tokyo:

“Maybe I drink alone but maybe I drink with friends / I just don’t know; you know? / Maybe I feel too much but maybe I fall in love with love, not lust.”

Back in May, however, Steele told Griffiths it was unlikely any new Empire Of The Sun music would come out this year or next.

"There's a lot of stuff but we just struggle so much with Zoom writing and it's always been such a 'in the room' kind of tangible band where you sort of run on the spirit of what's happening,” Steele said.

"It's kind of funny like that. We tried to entertain some things, but it just didn't really work.

"It's funny, when it's not in sync it just feels like you're painting over a wall that keeps drying a different colour."

Fingers crossed 2022 will be when we’re delivered new Empire tracks.
