It looks like scoring an Oscar nomination is harder than winning the actual award.

In eligibility lists sent to Academy members who can access the official website, 15 songs and 15 scores are on the shortlist for members to vote for; the final five chosen will be the nominees. 147 scores and 82 songs were submitted for consideration. Variety has learned that Vegas, the song Doja Cat wrote for Elvis and the original score for Tár, Cate Blanchett's latest critically acclaimed film, have been ruled ineligible for Oscar consideration.

The future of Vegas has been uncertain for months. Doja Cat and producers Roget Chahayed and Yeti Beats wrote the song, and it was chosen as the lead single from the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's Elvis flick. However, its interpolation of Presley's Hound Dog, written by Mike Stoller and the late Jerry Lieber, has reportedly ended the song's bid for Oscar consideration.

The Academy has strict rules around music, including that lyrics and music must be "original, written specifically for the motion picture" and the result of "creative interaction between the filmmakers and the songwriters who have been engaged to work directly on the motion picture." Vegas has found success elsewhere, as the song hit #10 on the Billboard charts and was the only track from Elvis submitted for awards.

The disqualification of Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir's Tár score was writing on the walls, Variety reports. The publication's sources noted that the amount of original music in the score was insufficient and directly went against this Academy rule: "a score shall not be eligible if it has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music."

Representatives for Warner Brothers and Universal Pictures, the companies who released the films mentioned above, haven't responded to Variety for comment yet.

Doja Cat recently commented that her upcoming music had been influenced by '90s German rave culture. She was interviewed by Givenchy's Matthew M. Williams for CR Fashion Book and shared some exciting musical revelations.

"We just have so many ideas, and making those ideas consistent is the challenge right now. I can’t really tell much. I just know there’s a lot going on," she answered a question in regard to the music she's working on right now.

"I’m very into this ’90s German rave kind of vibe right now, and it’s really fun. I know that’s kind of the trend at the moment, but I loved that stuff as a kid and now that I can express it.

"I’m sort of embracing that. That’s kind of a hint about the album. Rave culture, not house."

Last year Doja Cat released her chart-smashing album, Planet Her, which landed at number 2 on the Billboard 200 charts. The album featured hits including Get Into It (Yuh) and the SZA-featured Kiss Me More, which dominated the TikTok algorithm.
