It’s been seven long years for fans of Californian experimental hip hop outfit Death Grips, but the band have broken their silence by announcing the recording of their seventh studio album is now in progress.
News of the record’s creation was announced on Instagram earlier today, where a carousel of studio images was shared by the band alongside an update of their activities.
“The Writing and recording of our next album is underway,” the post read. “We’re looking forward to the new Death Grips record.”
Currently, it’s been over seven years since Death Grips last released a studio album, with Year Of The Snitch arriving back in June 2018. While a couple of standalone non-album releases have arrived since, few updates have been released in regard to the group’s current status.
While the band haven’t performed live since late 2023, rumours of their demise surfaced earlier this year when messages from co-founding keyboardist Andy Morin appeared online claiming that "it's over," noting that "Stefan [Burnett, aka vocalist MC Ride] doesn't want to do any more.
"But truthfully none of us can ever predict what will happen with the group,” he conceded.

Two months later, a rare Instagram post was shared by the band, stating “Despite rumor and hearsay, we remain active as Death Grips.” The post was signed by MC Ride and drummer Zach Hill, potentially indicating that Morin was no longer part of the group.
Death Grips rose to prominence in the early ‘00s with the release of their debut mixtape, 2011’s Exmilitary, and their 2012 album, The Money Store.
Their high-energy live shows, incendiary music, and unpredictable nature generated headlines the world over, with the band's rapid ascent culminating in their disbandment in mid-2014. The group would reunite the following year, and have remained largely active since.
Death Grips made their most recent appearance in Australia back in 2017, and while no further live appearances have been confirmed alongside news of the upcoming album, dedicated fans are likely hoping a local return will be on the cards at some point.
