Australian metal legends DAYSEND have re-emerged onto the metal scene after 14 years, announcing their return by releasing their acclaimed debut album Severance from 2003 on all major streaming platforms.

Formed in Sydney by Aaron Bilbija, Matt Lamb and Meredith Webster in mid-2002, DAYSEND has taken shape in many forms, in many ways over the years, finding themselves playing in support of Swedish heavy metal band The Haunted and Melbourne grindcore band Damaged. Soon after, their presence was made well aware on the metal circuits. The release of Severance saw widespread critical acclaim for both the band and album, with Triple J listeners voting it as Best Australian Metal Album of 2003. Severance is cherished and remembered for its slick, melodic aggression and technical mastery, becoming one of the most influential Australian metal releases at the time.

Between the years of 2003 and 2011, DAYSEND toured extensively across the country and worldwide, passing mics and sharing stages with names like Slipknot, Trivium, Arch Enemy, In Flames and Machine Head. Their continuous commitment to touring and live shows cultivated a loyal fan base that allowed for their legacy to continue to live on in the heavy metal world. During their active years, DAYSEND went on to release two more albums following their debut: The Warning (2007) and Eye of Chaos (2010).

Their eventual disbanding in May 2011 came after DAYSEND cancelled their tour with Nevermore in June of that year. Taking to Facebook, the band told fans: “The reason is not due to artistic differences or personal issues but rather that we feel we cannot continue with the band any longer. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to our family and friends who have supported us over the years and most of all, our loyal fans.”

Currently, DAYSEND stands as: Simon Calabrese (vocals), Aaron Bilbija (guitar), and Michael Kordek (guitar), with returning member Jason Turnbull (bass) and new drummer Mathew Piccolotto (ex-Switchblade).

Reflecting on the impact of their debut album 22 years after its initial release, Bilbija said: “It's been over 20 years since Severance's release, and we still get asked all the time about playing these songs again. It's a really special album for us, so we're excited to revisit this chapter and relive these iconic tunes one more time.”

While Kordek went on to express his excitement about the band reunion by stating that “it seems only fair” to rejoice in Severance’s success with fans old and new, Calabrese expressed: “Severance was about cutting ties with the past. Maybe it's time to suture the fuck out of some loose ends.”

Severance is now available to stream on all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music. DAYSEND 2025 tour dates are well and truly on the way, with dates to be announced shortly. Fans can keep tabs here to stay updated.
