Rare David Bowie, Oasis, Sex Pistols Items Feature In Huge Music Auction

15 October 2022 | 9:09 am | Mary Varvaris

Listen up, collectors.

On 4 November, the London-based Propstore will hold a live auction packed with music memorabilia that can be attended in person, over the phone, online or absentee.

The entire catalogue of items is spectacular, with Blur's The Magic Whip Tour ice cream van, Paul McCartney's photo-authenticated Morecambe & Wise Show striped blazer, David Bowie's "Major Tom" spacesuit worn in the Ashes To Ashes music video, a purple crystal necklace owned by Jimi Hendrix, a Nirvana Nevermind tour setlist handwritten by Dave Grohl with a ticket stub, Noel Gallagher's Custom Silver Sparkle Gibson Les Paul Florentine Guitar, The Sex Pistols' TEAC A3340 reel-to-reel tape recorder used on bootleg demo sessions, and a leather jacket owned by Slash make up only a handful of the highlights.

Propstore was founded in 1988 by Stephen Lane. His love for movies and enthusiasm for collecting prop art led to London and Los Angeles offices, with over 25,000 combined square feet of archived props and costumes.

Paul McCartney's striped blazer was one of five worn by The Beatles and comedian Ernie Wise for the Morecambe & Wise Show's musical number and was custom-made for the television taping.

The Magic Whip Tour ice cream van was donated to the Star Boot Sale charity auction in 2016 by Blur singer Damon Albarn, which raised money for the International Rescue Committee. Inside the van is a seat, a Carpigiani ice cream machine in working condition with instructions, and a tray used by Albarn at concerts to hand out ice cream to fans. As this is a working vehicle, the legal transfer must occur before making delivery arrangements.

The vintage TEAC A3340 used by The Sex Pistols was notably used to record the band's earliest known studio demo sessions in the Denmark Street residence, which they used as a rehearsal space. An integral piece of British punk history, many fans argue that the TEAC recorded unofficial Spunk bootleg album is the Sex Pistols' first album, not Never Mind The Bollocks

Going for £60,000 to 80,000, the Ashes To Ashes "Major Tom" spacesuit was worn by David Bowie in the music video and several other times during live performances.

Dave Grohl handwrote the Nirvana setlist, and a ticket stub was previously owned by someone who attended the gig in 1991. The catalogue description states, "The list is written in black marker on the back of a sheet of paper headed 'Sheffield University Students Union Entertainment Guest List'. The ticket stub features the band name, date, and price. The set list remains fragile due to a large tear, and both items display signs of discolouration."

A purple crystal necklace owned by Jimi Hendrix following the success of Purple Haze comes from the collection of Bob Levine, Hendrix's US Manager.

The leather jacket owned and extensively worn by Slash was in his possession until 2016, when he sold his collection and donated all proceeds to a children's charity. He wore the jacket during the music video for the Guns 'N' Roses song, Paradise City, and numerous occasions during the band's early career.

Noel Gallagher's Custom Silver Sparkle Gibson Les Paul Florentine Guitar is estimated to go for £300,000 to 500,000. Gallagher used and owned the Gibson and called it "the best guitar in the world" in a 1997 interview. He notably played the guitar while recording Oasis' third album, Be Here Now, and during a solo concert for the Tibetan Freedom Concert in New York.
