daine is building their discography with precision, class and songwriting prowess, releasing new single Shapeless, the title track from their second mixtape, which releases on the 24th of February.
The track reflects on morphing to the standards of society physically and emotionally as a form of leverage for social gain. In the midst of this endeavour of perfection, one becomes shapeless, for better or for worse, as people, or daine themselves, attempts to become flawless.
“It’s a dark track about becoming what people want but using that as leverage to get what you want”, they reveal.
When perceived in the real world, the concept of Shapeless may seem frightening, but daine transcends its notions beyond the physical and into the meta, reflecting the mixtape's themes of boundlessness beyond structure, one built on their experiences with disability and heartbreak and hardship.
“The lyrics are: ‘lips fake, eyes fake, teeth fake, facelift. I got it all, now I'm shapeless." daine explains.
“I’m customising my avatar to become a flawless CGI character, and using that to get further in my life.”
Sonically the track utilises shimmering, metallic synths, which strain above a late night dance floor worthy, bass heavy, jersey club rhythm. It takes textures from the worlds of euphoric dance music of festival main stages across the early 2010s and transforms them into the intricately curated pop world of daine.
