It’s looking like being Chet Faker’s year in regards to the ARIA Awards, with the neo-soul crossover artist picking up three awards and nine nominations today.
It is the first time an artist has taken a clean sweep of all three Artisan Awards since Silverchair’s Diorama in 2002.
The ARIA Awards awarded their Fine Arts and Artisan awards at an event in Sydney this morning that also announced the nominations for the main awards night. As well as leading the nominations with nine nods, Faker picked up two awards indirectly in the Artisan category where his engineer Eric J Dubowsky and cover designers Tin & Ed and Faker himself — real name Nicholas Murphy — won Producer Of The Year. It is the first time an artist has taken a clean sweep of all three Artisan Awards since Silverchair’s Diorama in 2002.
The record that is making Faker the class of the 2014 field is Built On Glass, released through independent label Future Classic. In fact, independent labels have dominated this year’s nominations, with Chugg Music’s Sheppard second with seven nominations, Inertia’s Sia with six and Liberation’s Dan Sultan with five.
It’s not until you get down to artists with four nominations that you see a real major label appearance, with EMI’s 5 Seconds Of Summer and Universal’s Iggy Azalea in that category. I OH YOU’s Violent Soho has also picked up four nominations.
