"If I were to override more of my basic instincts, where my heart is going, ‘Stop, stop, stop, you’re not okay,’ I would be bigger," Roan said.

Chappell Roan has indicated that she believes she’d be more successful if she were okay with “wearing a muzzle.”

The Good Luck, Babe! singer has made headlines not only for her takeover of the singles charts but also for her reactions to paparazzi and fame. Last year, Roan cancelled a festival appearance to prioritise her health, revealed that she had been diagnosed with severe depression, set boundaries for herself and fans, and called out fan abuse, harassment, and stalking.

In a new interview with BBC Radio 1, the American singer reflected on another incident that made waves: when she criticised a photographer shouting at celebrities on the red carpet during last year’s MTV Video Music Awards. To her, that behaviour was “not normal.”

“I was looking around, and I was like, ‘This is what people are okay with all the time? And I’m supposed to act normal? This is not normal. This is crazy.’”

Following the incident, Roan’s fans applauded her stance, while others were quick to label her “spoiled” and a “diva.” However, Roan has no regrets.

“I’ve been responding that way to disrespect my whole life,” she continued, “But now there are cameras on me, and I also happen to be a pop star, and those things don’t match.”

She added, “I think, actually, I’d be more successful if I was okay wearing a muzzle.

“If I were to override more of my basic instincts, where my heart is going, ‘Stop, stop, stop, you’re not okay,’ I would be bigger. I would be way bigger... And I would still be on tour right now.”

In September, Roan celebrated the first anniversary of the release of her debut album, The Rise & Fall Of A Midwest Princess, saying that the album changed her life “forever.”

“This has been amazing and hard and beautiful and eye opening and empowering and transformative and every emotion ever,” Roan added on social media. “Thank you thank you thank you for everything. Thank you for showing up for this project and believing in me.”
