Meanjin/Brisbane venue Black Bear Lodge has taken to social media to issue a call for general decorum following a recent show which saw the gathered audience take “assault on the venue”, leaving it in poor condition.

The venue, which opened its doors in 2011 as a replacement for The Troubadour, shared recent photos that were taken from inside, showing a morass of graffitied and spray painted tags all over their walls.

“Hey mates, just wanted to share some perspective here. We had a show in the other week that won't be named where the crowd took assault on the venue and put it in one of the worse conditions we've seen,” the owners wrote on social media.

“Glasses being thrown on the ground, cigarette lighters used to burn the walls and ceilings, spray paint and graffiti on surfaces like the wood panelling which is basically impossible to scrub off without a deep sand or replacing the panel entirely.”

Responding to the nature of the poor condition the venue had been left in, the Black Bear Lodge team clarified that they don’t have a specific issue with graffiti or tags in general, but prefer it to be done in a suitable location.

“We generally don't mind if it's done in the bathrooms, especially when it involves a level of creative expression that is pleasant to gaze off to during the brief moment of bliss when taking a leek [sic],” they wrote. “But we'd really appreciate it if its kept off the wood and nice walls.

“We try really hard to make the venue feel warm, comfortable and enticing and would love to keep doing that for you,” the venue concluded. “Coming in on our days off to clean graffiti after a weekend of serving up good times can really take the wind out of our sails 🫠”

Black Bear Lodge recent hosted a large number of punters as part of the annual BIGSOUND, though these shows apparently took place without incident. The venue will also host New Zealand musician Lilbubblegum, Jacob Fitzgerald, and Jess Day over the coming days, and audiences are expected to be on their best behaviour.
