On Friday night (22 November), the Sydney location of Behind The Gallery was robbed. Prints by LA-based photographer Chris Cuffaro were among the items stolen.
Cuffaro is currently in Australia presenting his Greatest Hits: Pearl Jam | Alive 1991-92 exhibition in Melbourne and Sydney. Honouring one of the band’s best-known songs, the exhibition captures the energy of a band about to explode.
The exhibition took over 17 Oxford Street, Paddington, Sydney, from 19-23 November. According to a post shared by Behind The Gallery on Instagram, a “large box” of Cuffaro’s photography, which included Pearl Jam, Michael Hutchence, and George Michael, was stolen on Friday night.
“Devastated to report between the hours of Friday night & Saturday morning, there was a robbery at our gallery,” Behind The Gallery’s Creative Director Stephen Dallimore shared. “We are working with the local police departments following forensic tests, checking camera footage on the investigation.
“A large box of Chris Cuffaro's prints was taken that included Pearl Jam, Michael Hutchinson [sic], George Michael, grunge artists to name a few, along with iPad, sound system and books on The Strokes & Amy Winehouse.
“These prints are Chris's livelihood and we want to ensure the return of them all safety.”

Cuffaro’s Pearl Jam series showcases striking live shots of Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Dave Abbruzzese, and Mike McCready. In addition to prints, the exhibition hosted music, conversations, workshops, and more.
Cuffaro said of his return to Australia, “I cannot wait to be back in Australia. I love Australia. This will be my 12th trip since 1988’s George Michael FAITH Tour and my 5th & 6th exhibitions in Australia since 2018.
“This pop-up Pearl Jam exhibition is a big part of my Greatest Hits project! From the iconic photos you know, to the never seen before photos, Greatest Hits: Pearl Jam | Alive 1991-1992 celebrates those amazing moments and experiences encompassing a complete collection of my time with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Pearl Jam.”
Dallimore added, “We are very excited to be able to bring together this unique experience of iconic Pearl Jam photography, some never seen before, for the fans and collectors and showcase it in Melbourne and Sydney.”
Behind The Gallery hosted an exhibition on Nine Inch Nails earlier this year.
Jonathan Rach, a world-renowned photographer who followed Nine Inch Nails on their massive Self Destruct Tour (9 March 1994 – 8 September 1996) in support of their second album, The Downward Spiral, was in Australia hosting an exhibition from that pivotal time in the band’s career.
The collection shared never-before-seen photos from that time and also contained recently rediscovered images, not just of Nine Inch Nails but also of legends like David Bowie and Lou Reed.
