Jonathan Rach, a world-renowned photographer who followed Nine Inch Nails on their massive Self Destruct Tour (9 March 1994 – 8 September 1996) in support of their second album, The Downward Spiral, will be in Australia next week hosting an exhibition from that pivotal time in the band’s career.
Taking over Behind The Gallery from Wednesday, 6 to Sunday, 10 March, at 524 Flinders Steet, an event-hire space in Melbourne’s CBD, Rach will celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Downward Spiral by showcasing never-before-seen photos from that era.
Rach will provide 45 images from the global tour – which included Australia, providing intimate looks into the members of Nine Inch Nails’ lives during the tour, as well as showing off era-defining photography of a pioneering band.
The collection contains recently rediscovered images, not just of Nine Inch Nails, but legends like David Bowie and Lou Reed. Some photos were also snapped at the industrial rockers’ record-breaking six concerts at the Hollywood Palladium in 2018. Collectors will have to get in early to purchase limited edition numbered prints signed by Rach.
The Photography of Jonathan Rach: Images of Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral and more opens on Wednesday, 6 March, from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm. On Saturday, 9 March, fans can attend an artist talk with Rach beginning at 12:30 pm and ending at 2 pm.

In a statement, Rach said about bringing the exhibition to Australia, “I was witnessing truly honest and iconic moments in music history. The result is what will be on display in Melbourne.”
Behind The Gallery’s Creative Director, Stephen Dallimore, added, “We are extremely honoured to be trusted to showcase this collection of photographs for the Nine Inch Nails community.
“Jonathan's images provide a rare insight into one of music's most important artists and celebrated tours in music culture. We look forward to creating a special event for the fans and collectors; this is not to be missed!”
Nine Inch Nails last toured Australia in March 2014 during a co-headline run with Queens Of The Stone Age. Check out The Music’s Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane reviews. Unfortunately, vocalist Trent Reznor revealed that the band have no plans for touring in an interview last year.
