‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’ Singer Passes Away, Age 69

María Mendiola was part of Spanish disco duo Baccara.

María Mendiola, one-half of ‘70s Spanish disco duo Baccara, has passed away in Madrid, aged 69.

The singer was most widely known for 1977 hit single Yes Sir, I Can Boogie, which became a viral hit in recent years after becoming an unofficial anthem for Scottish soccer fans.

The official Baccara Facebook page today shared a tribute to Mendiola, calling her a “wonderful artist” and “friend”.

As The Guardian noted, Yes Sir, I Can Boogie returned to the UK charts at the end of last year when footage surfaced of Scotland’s national soccer team singing the tune went viral.

The track has also been covered by the likes of Goldfrapp, The Fratellis and more.
