More than 35 years since the concept first hit the airwaves, MTV Unplugged is set to receive an Australian tribute this August, with local supergroup MONSTR coming together to celebrate the best of the series.

For those unfamiliar with the long-running program, MTV Unplugged was a novel concept that first launched in November 1989 as a way for popular artists to play live and often stripped-back sets showcasing their acclaimed catalogues.

The series gained widespread fame when Paul McCartney released his 1991 performance as a live album, with Eric Clapton's 1992 appearance going on to sell more than 26 million copies and win him six Grammy Awards. One of the most famous performances came by way of Nirvana, whose 1993 set was recorded just months before the death of Kurt Cobain, with its posthumous release becoming an iconic record of the era.

Countless artists have performed on the series over the years, including Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Midnight Oil, Mariah Carey, and more, while an Australian version would launch in 2018, hosting Courtney Barnett, Amy Shark, Tash Sultana, Gang Of Youths, and others.

Now, another group of Aussies will pay tribute to the series, with MONSTR comprising a number of classic local names in its ranks.

MONSTR features Taxiride’s Jason Singh on vocals, The Superjesus’ Stu Rudd on bass, Dragon’s Pete Drummond on drums, and The Screaming Jets’ Jimi Hocking on guitar, bringing together decades of combined experience for an event that won’t be soon forgotten.

Though their set details haven’t been announced, the show will see the quartet “bringing to life the unforgettable hits by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Eagles, Alanis Morissette, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart and many more” while also injecting “their own special energy into these classics offering fans a totally unique experience.”

The one-of-a-kind performance is set to take place at St Kilda’s Memo Music Hall on Friday, August 15. Tickets to the event are on sale now.
