A “birthday wish” from guitarist Kyle Gass at Tenacious D’s Sydney show over the weekend has sparked controversy, with one Australian senator going so far as to demand the Jack Black duo be “deported immediately”.
During their show at ICC Sydney Theatre on Sunday night as part of their highly anticipated Australian tour, Black presented Gass with a cake in front of the sold-out crowd in celebration of his 64th birthday.
When asked to make a wish, Gass quipped, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” in reference to the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend.
The comment was met with laughter by the audience, but footage of the gig has since stirred up debate online.
@dark_hive Comedian Jack Black's bandmate makes a "birthday wish" during a performance in Sydney, says he wishes they "don't miss Trump next time." Black was videoed giving Tenacious D band member Kyle Gass a birthday cake. "Make a wish," Black said. Gass then responded: "Don’t miss Trump next time." The crowd seemed to think the "joke" was funny. Maybe, just maybe, these people are actually the evil ones. #jackblack #donaldtrump #trump #rally #DJT #news #foryou

Australian Senator Ralph Babet, Leader of the United Australia Party, has today issued a media release that demands “Tenacious D must be deported immediately”.
“I condemn in the strongest possible way the call to political violence by Tenacious D in Sydney on Sunday,” Babet said.
“To advocate and or wish for the assassination of a President is egregious, disgusting, filthy, evil, and not acceptable in any way, shape or form.”
He added: “I call on the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese to join me in denouncing Tenacious D, Jack Black and band member Kyle Gass, and I call on the Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to revoke their visas and deport them immediately.”

Tenacious D’s Newcastle show, which was set to take place tonight, has been postponed. In a statement, tour promoters Frontier Touring said:
Frontier Touring regret to advise that Tenacious D's concert tonight at Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been postponed.
Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets until further information is available.
Tenacious D’s Spicy Meatball tour continues in Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide later in the week with support from Crusade.
The last time Jack Black and Kyle Gass toured Australia was in May 2013.
The Music has reached out to Immigration Minister Andrew Giles and Frontier Touring for comment.
In addition to upsetting Babet, Tenacious D might have also received a “lifetime ban” on the radio. Kyle Sandilands slammed the pair on the Kyle & Jackie O Show this morning, stating:
“Someone’s promoting the assassination of another human being? Seriously, regardless of whether you like someone or not, wanting someone killed and promoting it is the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
“That’s some serious, twisted shit. And whoever that is, is banned for life. I never want to speak to him again. Would we speak to this person?”
After finding out that the joke came from Gass, he continued: “That’s really surprising. See, those two seem like normal people, not unhinged lunatics.
“A note to our talent bookers. I will not be participating in any future Tenacious D interviews. Someone wishing someone dead, that nearly got assassinated. All jokes aside, that’s too much for me.”
