The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is proud to introduce their first ever video game concert, known as Press Play.

Though the ASO is usually renowned for their virtuosic takes on more classical pieces, August will see the enchanting body of musicians perform beloved themes from The Legend of Zelda, Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy, Super Mario, Halo, and more live onstage. These iconic soundtracks defined generations, so Press Play is sure to be a completely transformative experience.

A caption from an official ASO Instagram post reads, “Gamers, music lovers, nostalgia seekers – this one’s for you.”

Tickets for Press Play sold out with the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra in 2024, and saw audiences dress up and immerse themselves in their favourite gaming worlds. Now, it is finally Adelaide’s turn, with the ASO bringing this much-loved concert to audiences at the Festival Theatre this on Friday, August 1st, and Saturday, August 2nd.

“I love the thought that a diehard gamer could be coming to a concert like this seeing an orchestra for the first time but recognising everything they hear,” says the ASO’s Principal Bass Trombone player and avid gamer Amanda Tillett. “It’s a fallacy that video game music is just for gamers. If the music is good, it doesn’t matter what it was originally written for – people will enjoy it. Including gaming alongside traditional classical and film music in orchestral seasons is exciting. It makes space for more people and ultimately more connection.”

The concert will be led by ABC Classic’s Game Show host Meena Shamaly, who says, “Video game music is now more creative than ever, because it can be nearly any sound you imagine. Gaming scores are contemporary classical adventures that powerfully blend tradition with the future. They are immersive, dynamic, and non-linear experiences, actively responding to the player and bringing entire worlds to life.

“With exciting, evocative, and unforgettable themes,” Meena says, “these sounds remain in the heart long after the screen is off.”

Tickets are on sale now. To purchase tickets, or for more event details, visit the ASO’s official website here.
