More Artemas More Artemas

British alt-pop magnate Artemas is gearing up to embark on his first-ever Australian tour, with seven shows on the itinerary for this November and December – right in time for summer.

Right now in the Northern Hemisphere, pop girlies (and boy-lies) everywhere are making the most of their Brat Summer – a trend stemming from the release of Charli xcx’s game-changing sixth album, Brat. The record, its themes and its aesthetics – a bratty, punkish type of gleeful hedonism – has absolutely captured the zeitgeist, even making its way into politics.

Why is this relevant to Artemas? Well for starters, the 24-year-old artist is a huge fan of Charli himself. His third mixtape, yustyna, also arrived just over a month after Brat (hitting streaming platforms in mid-July) and appeals to much of the same audience.

In a new interview with The Music, we posed to Artemas that he could be considered the “male Brat” – a suggestion he was utterly thrilled by. “That means a lot to me,” he said enthusiastically, praising the feminine energy driving the global hype around Brat. He continued: "I think we need to take inspiration from the girls. They're absolutely killing it at the moment.

“For a while, they've been more fearless than us – and in these kind of things like lyrics. We shouldn't be afraid to say zany and more embarrassing things in our lyrics.”

As for what colour he’d use to complement the sticky lime green of Brat? "I think the theme for [yustyna] is actually dark blue.”

Speaking of Artemas’ love for Charli xcx, the two recently shared a festival lineup at Open'er in Poland. Artemas described Charli’s performance as “amazing”, gushing of the atmosphere she fostered with her set: “could really feel it in the audience the other day – and just around the festival – that no one was gonna miss that show. That was really cool. I hope to have some moment like that in the future.”

Artemas’ Australian trek – formally dubbed you’re really early… the tour – kicks off with two shows in Melbourne (Naarm) on Tuesday November 19 and Thursday 21. From there, he’ll perform two shows each in Brisbane (Meanjin) and Sydney (Eora) before dashing off to New Zealand – head here for more info on the whole run.
