In the 1970s in Basildon, Fletcher formed the group Composition of Sound alongside Martin Gore and Vince Clarke. Later on they recruited singer Dave Gahan, which saw them change the name of their group to Depeche Mode.

The band went on to achieve 17 top 10 albums across the UK, with hit singles including Personal Jesus, Just Can't Get Enough and Enjoy The Silence.

Fletcher played on all of Depeche Mode's records which included Songs Of Faith And Devotion which released in 1993 and Ultra in 1997 which both landed at #1 on the UK album charts.

In the 1989 documentary 101, which was centred around the band's Music For The Masses Tour, Fletcher spoke about his roll in the band stating, "Martin’s the songwriter, Alan’s the good musician, Dave’s the vocalist, and I bum around.”
