Melbourne music venue Stay Gold fell victim to wild weather on Wednesday (25 June), with The Age reporting that a six-metre section of the wall blew off due to the wind.

It was freezing, windy, and raining in Melbourne yesterday, and by the time firefighters arrived at the Brunswick-based venue, approximately “six metres of parapet wall” had fallen from the building and struck an awning.

Firefighters arrived on-site at 4:40 pm, after wind gusts picked up at 50 km/h at 4 pm. The Bureau of Meteorology estimated that the winds in Melbourne would be 30km/h on Wednesday, which would then decrease to between 15km/h and 20km/h in the evening.

The Age notes that a pedestrian was injured in the incident, but they sustained only minor injuries and weren’t taken to the hospital.

The site was considered under control at 5 pm, when a building surveyor was called in to assess the venue.

In an Instagram post shared this afternoon (26 June), the venue confirmed that no one was seriously hurt in the incident; however, it will be closed for now. Stay Gold and its neighbouring pizza bar, Ollie’s Pizza Parlour, will remain closed as “engineers, surveyors, and our landlord assess the situation and make sure it’s 100% safe for everyone to return.”

Stay Gold offers live music and cold drinks and operates until late at night. The venue is situated on the busy strip of Sydney Road in the inner-city Melbourne suburb of Brunswick.

Stay Gold became a part of Melbourne’s energetic music scene in late 2018 and took over the space formerly known as The Phoenix, with a brand-new band room and indoor and outdoor licensed areas.

It launched thanks to the work of the group behind successful Brisbane venues such as The Brightside, Blackbear Lodge, Blutes Bar and Barbara, as well as the 2018 Good Things Festival.

Group Director Jesse Barbera said at the time, “When the opportunity came up to transform The Phoenix, we took it immediately. Brunswick and greater Melbourne generally is one of the most supportive music communities in the world, and we’re very excited to join it.

“Our goal is to provide great shows, parties and events for that community on a weekly basis.”
