Subvert isn’t here to change up the streaming service game; it’s here to offer something different.
The artist-owned online music marketplace has officially launched following beta testing over the last year and its official announcement in 2024. The platform is a home for independent musicians, record labels, and fans to sell and purchase digital music and merchandise directly to audiences.
As a website and what it offers, Subvert is far closer to Bandcamp than Spotify. However, its business model couldn’t be more different.
Members of Subvert collectively own and govern the marketplace through a dual-entity structure that includes a limited cooperative association—the Subvert Cooperative LCA—alongside a public-benefit corporation—Subvert, Inc.—which the platform’s cooperative wholly owns.
Subvert was born out of a response to Bandcamp’s two successive purchases. Epic Games acquired the online marketplace in March 2022, and in October 2023, it was sold to Songtradr. As a result of both acquisitions, numerous employees at Bandcamp were laid off.
So, Subvert aims to offer something different to artists and fans, with the former winning out due to a 0% platform fee and a comprehensive policy that prohibits posting music made with generative AI.

At the time of publication, Subvert has over 23,500 owners worldwide. Record labels including Warp Records, Polyvinyl Record Co., and Thrill Jockey Records joined the service late last year.
Last June, the six-member board was elected. It comprises founder Austin Robey alongside Sean Adams, Iz Ocampo, Hannah Lee Benson (artist representative), Nick Austin (supporter representative), and Freya Yamamoto (Board Chair, label representative).
Australian singer-songwriter Laura Imbruglia said of the new online marketplace, “There’s a new website launching today called Subvert - it has the aim of being the new Bandcamp, but owned by artists as a co-op.
“Why? Cos Bandcamp has changed owners a few times in recent years and there are concerns the platform could become corporate or unstable. Also, discovery has become more difficult on there and the vibe has become more mainstream.”
She continued, “Subvert is kinda like Bandcamp Fridays but every day. 0% platform fee for artists and labels. Artists keep everything except payment processing costs.
“Don’t quiz me on all the nitty gritty, go have a look around & read up on it. I made the RRP a bit cheaper than what it is on Bandcamp too cos it had default figures in the fields and I was too lazy to investigate what other people are charging. Enjoy!”
Melbourne-born, Berlin-based independent artist Space Cadet 64 added, “Subvert is a new music platform that is collectively owned and controlled by its artists and members.
“In a world where artists, and consumers, get ripped off constantly, and have little to no control over industry decisions, the large collective behind subvert have been thinking about, discussing, and developing an alternative that values music and artists first, and allows the artists and members on the platform to directly influence the operation of the platform.”
Australian folk singer Ruth Hazleton wrote, “Thrilled to be a co-owner member of this music platform - launched hours ago (and already sales coming in!!)
“Owned entirely by us - a community of artists and small labels, free to join, no platform fees and 100% profit back to artists. Also with a comprehensive no AI policy. 20k+ artists and counting. I’ve been watching the development of @subvertworld over the last 18 months and finally, it’s HERE.
“A sorely needed home for independent music & music discovery. Congratulations and thank you to the big dreamers who’ve kicked this off.”
