Victorian-based critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and disability advocate Eliza Hull has marked her global publishing deal with Sony Music Publishing with something special: a unique cover of an iconic Silverchair song.

Adding synthesisers, a string section and keyboards, Hull retains the angst of Tomorrow by providing her airy yet passionate vocals to the powerful, emotionally resonant piano-led arrangement.

Where you can instantly hear Daniel Johns’ epic yells in the chorus, Hull offers her own key change while violins circle around her. Hull’s rendition of Tomorrow marks her first sync placement since partnering with Sony Music Publishing. She was invited to cover Tomorrow for the trailer of the new Paramount+ series, Playing Gracie Darling, which lands on streaming on Thursday, 14 August.

Hull said of Silverchair’s impact on her, “Reimagining Silverchair’s Tomorrow means so much to me, not just as an artist, but as someone who grew up feeling at times inadequate and different.

“As a young person, this song helped me make sense of the world around me, music was often an escape, and I remember feeling the power of the lyrics. They feel as poignant as ever, in a time when we are seeing greed and money continue to take hold.”

She continued, “To now be an artist performing this iconic track feels like a powerful full-circle moment - especially because Daniel Johns recently shared my song Running Underwater on his social media, the first I ever wrote about having a disability. I loved reimagining Tomorrow, and when recording it, felt a new level of emotion that I didn’t expect, I actually burst into tears.”

Hull’s version of Tomorrow was produced by Pip Norman (Baker Boy, Missy Higgins) and features additional production and arrangement by James McGuffie. Renowned composer Erkki Veltheim (Gurrumul, Kate Miller-Heidke, Emily Wurramara) provided the stunning string arrangement, while Luke Howard played the piano and Leigh Fisher played the drums.

Hull joins Sony Music Publishing in a period of career achievements, including opening for Sarah Blasko on her recent regional tour, and a recent co-writing trip in London alongside Liam Howe (Lana Del Rey), Brett Shaw (Florence & The Machine), James Knight (Ellie Goulding, The Kooks), and Tom Iansek (Big Scary) in preparation for her upcoming record.

“It’s a dream come true to work with the team at Sony Music Publishing,” Hull said of today’s news. “They deeply understand my songwriting and my advocacy.”

Dan Palm, Head of Licensing & Sync at Sony Music Publishing, added: “It has been such a privilege to collaborate and work alongside Eliza on a number of projects recently, and we couldn’t be more excited to officially welcome her to the Sony Music Publishing family.

“Eliza is an immensely talented artist, and her tireless advocacy work is inspiring and vitally important, particularly in striving for a more diverse and inclusive creative industry.”
