The first Rebetika sounds began to be recorded in Athens in the prison of Medrese in 1834, the so-called Mourmourika. The term ‘Rebetiko’ was established in the 1960s and included genres such as Smyrnaika, Politika, Mourmourika and other songs which did not have a close musicological relationship with each other. Rebetiko music’s themes include love, drugs, prison, the underworld, going against the rule of law and social issues. In 2017 rebetiko was added in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.
