What?
Sydney singer-songwriter Jack R. Reilly’s been a cornerstone of the Sydney DIY scene for as long as anyone can remember. When he's not recording or performing at venues like the famous Metro Theatre, he's likely bopping his head along to the next big thing. Recognised for his diaristic and poignant songwriting by the likes of triple j, and ‘Clerks’ director Kevin Smith — who enjoyed Jack's song about the 1994 film — Jack's also a mainstay of the live stage, supporting Hobo Johnson, Gavin DeGraw, Kevin Devine, into It. Over It, and many more. He's also sold out his own headline shows, wowing crowds near and far.
Seeing Frenzal Rhomb perform on TV during the 1999 ARIAs was the lightbulb moment that inspired Jack to pursue music. Coming up performing in bands throughout his schooling journey, a couple of close confidantes convinced him to go down the solo route in 2011. Inspired by both equally talented singer-songwriters like Kevin Devine, Elliot Smith, and Phoebe Bridgers, as well as rappers with unparalleled command of the English language like Skepta, MF DOOM, and Tyler, The Creator, the variety of his influences is evident in his music.
Like any truly talented artist, Jack keeps old and new fans on their toes. Peppered throughout his discography are things like a reference to a vintage Jaws The Ride, which he makes sit seamlessly alongside vulnerable, intimate tales that are all-too familiar. Every Jack R. Reilly song unfolds with a flourish — and a knowing wink or two.
Close collaborators include Jonno Tooke of Cry Club, who's been producing his music since 2013, and Obscura Hail (with Jack influencing their track ‘Psychic Cemetery). A new album is set for release in 2025, with the album mixed by Angie McMahon's producer Gormie, and mastered by one of Australian music's hardest workers, Andrei Eremin.
With new album After The Parade out on February 5th, a follow up to 2020's Middle Everything, Jack R. Reilly is about to be everywhere you look. The launch show for the album is taking place at Sydney's The Chippo Hotel April 4th. More than likely adorned in some truly enviable vintage t-shirts, 2025 is the year of Jack R. Reilly.
