The Zephyr’s Song.
Zephyr Timbre play Friday’s on Friday and the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on November 21.
Brisbane biggest funkin’ groove outfit Zephyr Timbre are happy chappies. They’re debut EP Abstrakt Fusion has been picked up by Triple J and is currently copping the flogging it deserves over the airwaves. On top of that they’ve rocked the eastern seaboard of Australia with the national Livid tour, and have just been added as national supports for Jamiroquai’s upcoming tour of Australia. They’re kicking off the first RiverFM Fridays show this weekend, so I thought it was time again to catch up with the bands enigmatic MC Sureshock.
How's the Livid tour been for Zephyr? Which city rocked the hardest?
“Brisbane rocked the hardest and we were really spun out about the crowd reaction as we knew that a lot of crew knew us but the photos Sam took of the crowd confirm to me that Briz is the shit. The tour was a great opportunity to make our sound hit the Southern states , the crowds were really receptive and got the style really well. Thanks to Haggis in Melbourne, when he ran out into the crowd to bring them close to stage we nailed all three gigs!”
How's the new EP doing?
“It’s doing real well for a small independent EP, its not an accurate indication of ZT at the moment as were moving into new musical areas with the new stuff, house, breaks and pure dub just to name a few styles. The next EP is gonna be a killer!”
Describe the Zephyr sound for those not familiar with it?
“An international fusion of beats jazz hip hop breaks soul and funk. Basically think of a studio session with Rennie Pilgrim, Fat Boy Slim, Massive Attack ,Bob Marley, Public Enemy, KRS-One, Aretha Franklin and Bjork and you might get close.”
How do you see yourself in relation to the band as the MC? And how does your solo career as MC Sureshock work/conflict with the band?
“It’s a double edged sword , on one side the band business is very spontaneous and unpredictable and could change in a minute as to what gets offered to us through the agent and the manager , we are a young band in the scene of things and we need to jump on opportunity even if it costs us money ,even if we cant pay rent. Thanks to our managers faith we can achieve more than we could before and do allot more projects than we could have, its all for the cause! On the other side my MC career is taking off, after 12 years of hard work and persistence, the DJ's I work with are amazing and are all doing the best they can, they are growing in maturity and developing a unique style, entering into production and holding their own . I feel proud that we have done something, we played gigs for free for ages and pushed new sounds to unsuspecting crowds for years and made it work. I have managed to change the general perception of MC's from annoying self indulgent talentless bastards into a respectable art form in the dance community, and give a space to the talented motherfuckers who cant get a gig to do they're thing. That’s my perception , I feel its true , and my MC work is fraught with tall poppy syndrome but I love it and I’m not gonna stop until I can fuse my work with such talented artists as Zephyr Timbre and the dance community producers and DJs so as Australia dance music and music can get some world wide respect!”
What can we expect from the upcoming show at Fridays?
“A mad show , totally vibed up as its gonna be a relaxed gig with no pressure, if you want to know the band come an check it out! As were gonna be rare as hens teeth soon!”
