Davey, lead Davey.

Short description of your band and music: I'm really interested in trying to tell stories that are Australian and quite ordinary - none of the ideas in my songs are particularly lofty but hopefully people connect with the weird little details. I met a guy yesterday who really liked a line about chops defrosting on a sink in our song There Will Be Light which is about growing up in a country town. Musically, the styles we play (folk, alt-country, soul and rock'n'roll) are so rooted in American culture so I find it interesting to try and shoehorn in local stories, change some chords, add some reverb to evoke miles of nothingness, mention cricket and see what happens.

Best WAM-related story? Last time we played a showcase at the Mustang Bar the cover band from the night before left their setlists taped to the stage. I spent the whole gig resisting the urge to play Summer of '69 and Living On A Prayer.

What do you think separates the WA music scene apart from the rest of the country? It's expensive to get a band on a plane and tour so you end up staying here for ages and playing a tonne of shows before you even think about leaving and saying to the rest of the country 'Here we are - this is us.' we don't serve up the sauce 'til it's bloody well ready and delicious.

What WA bands are you vibing on right and why? Jacob Diamond, Joni & The Moon, Flooded Palace, The Wilds and Mei Saraswati have especially tickled my ears this year. Jacob knows fancy chords and the right spots to put them, Joni sings like an angel and has amazing production, Flooded Palace are scruffy, hairy, smelly, sweet and delicate all at once, The Wilds are Perth's answer to The Eagles, and Mei smashes the digital world into the natural/organic world in a really magical way.

Why should people come and see you from amongst the many cool bands at WAM? Luke Dux is in our band... oh hang on, he's in all the other bands too! Dammit.

What's on the horizon for you? Lots more touring next year, festivals and an album release.
