'I Wanted My Album To Feel Bigger Than Just Music': Charley On 'The Chronicles Of A Serial Idealist'

Our Top Five Picks For Field Day 2013

2012 is coming to a close; leaving behind various days spent in the sun, we must now welcome 2013 and what better way to do so than with Field Day.

Sydney, the main city in Australia. Technically Canberra is the capital city of our nation; however some might say that Sydney should be considered for the title, why you ask?

Well, thousands of tourists travel to Sydney every year to see the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and to party at the infamous Kings Cross. Sydney is also the business hub of Australia, housing the main offices of various Australian companies including our own Purple Sneakers office, but one thing Sydney doesn’t lack (and which should probably be highlighted a lot more often, I think), is a vibrant musical culture.

Yep, Sydney has a great music culture and hosts various gigs for international and national artists. Sydney also has its own breed of music festivals such as On The Harbour, and Harbourlife. But of course since 2012 has come to a close leaving behind various days spent in the sun, we must now welcome 2013 and what better way to do so than with Field Day.

Field Day 2013 is on New Year’s Day and there is no better way to enter the New Year, than with new music acts that shone in 2012 and will shine even brighter in 2013. With headliners TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB and HOT CHIP travelling from the UK to join us, we cannot be happier, and our very own PURPLE SNEAKERS DJS will be making an appearance at Field Day, and we have now picked five acts that will definitely be worth a look on New Years Day.

DJANGO DJANGO

After recording an album in a bedroom purely because it had the necessary equipment, DJANGO DJANGO bassist Jimmy Dixon says that they were just happy to finally finish the album. Now their self-titled debut has been played across the globe and famous music magazine NME has even invited them to headline their Awards Tour, DJANGO DJANGO has most definitely exploded. The British foursome have a unique sound that you cannot help but become addicted to, and beginning their Australian Tour at Falls Festival, and Southbound, DJANGO DJANGO will be stopping by Field Day and will unleash their catchy, electronic melodies upon your ears.

VAN SHE

Hailing from Sydney, VAN SHE’s sound has evolved since their humble beginnings in 2002. First being put on the radar with the release of their debut album V, VAN SHE’s album burst through the local music barriers with their electronic melodies, that came with a rock edge. Tracks such as ‘Strangers’ and ‘Kelly’ caught the eyes of musos across the country, and since then, VAN SHE have burst into a band that cannot be missed. With the release of Idea Of Happiness, VAN SHE were officially dubbed as electronic geniuses ditched the rock sound for a more poppy feel, and bringing ‘Jamacia’ into the world. VAN SHE are the perfect summer band and will bring in the New Year with sounds of coconut cocktails and beach bonfires.

NAYSAYER AND GILSUN

NAYSAYER AND GILSUN know how to throw a party. Playing at festivals like Groovin’ The Moo in 2012, making everyone in the audience get up and dance, even if it wasn’t on their agenda, because that’s just how infectious their music is. NGTV is the most popular venture of the Melbourne duo, mixing music, film, and television live, NAYSAYER AND GILSUN create an audio visual experience that just can’t be topped. In 2012 the boys spent most of their time recording their own tracks and the first to be released is ‘In Mind’ that features the vocals from friend Simon Lam and is perfect to listen to in absolutely any situation. NAYSAYER AND GILSUN have an EP due out in early 2013 through their label Bossman Records, but before that, if you haven’t experienced NGTV, you must head over to their set this New Year.

DISCLOSURE

Releasing their debut EP The Face in 2012, British duo DISCLOSURE have taken music to a new level with their original electronic beats that caught the eye of SBTRKT. The producer asked the brothers to join him at his London shows and DISCLOSURE then was introduced to the British public who, thanks to the blogosphere, introduced them to the world. DISCLOSURE’s collaboration with Sam Smith ‘Latch’, has been played absolutely everywhere since its release in October, and their live shows are known for being very spontaneous which makes DISCLOSURE a perfect fit for Field Day in 2013, they are ones to watch in the New Year so they are definitely one act that’s worth your summer time.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB are the trio that brought you Tourist History, a collection of poppy tracks that made you happy no matter what mood you’re in, and now they’re back with their darker album Beacon, and a performance at Field Day. Beacon uses a lot more synths and has darker tones than the happy album that shot them into the music stratosphere, however the tracks are great and that’s all that matters of course. TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB are one of the most anticipated acts of Field Day and so  I recommend getting a decent spot because the Irish boys will be putting all of their energy into a show that makes the audience feels involved and close to the boys. NME says at TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB shows, you want to make a fool of yourself, so do it kids, you know you want to!
