After taking a momentary break from music due to one member's battles with chronic pain, PLGRMS are back, and more anthemic than ever..
Just when PLGRMS seemed to be reaching fever pitch, things suddenly died down. In 2017, the Sydney duo - comprised of Jacob Pearson and production wizard Jonathan Bowden - arrived with a string of singles that seemingly set them up to become the next festival favourite; their sound taking the anthemic qualities of groups like Mansionair and Vera Blue (two acts they've supported over the years) and twisting it with instrumentals that sit somewhere between indie and electronica, blending this fine line as rich, organic instrumentation weaves in and out of dancing synth lines and building vocals.
In early 2019, their single Daylight took them to the next level, arriving with the promise of more to come. However, just shortly after, the group were forced to take some time away from the limelight, as Pearson battled with chronic pain, which for those unfamiliar with the condition, is enough to leave you completely bed-ridden if you ignore the advice to rest and not push yourself (which is impossible to do if you're playing some of the shows and festivals that PLGRMS were).
Today, they emerge out the other side with a little more knowledge under their belt, utilising some of that time away in the spotlight to hone in their craft and present us Disappear, their first single in a year that course corrects their trajectory and realigns their position as an act to watch in the year ahead. Premiering on Pilerats a day early, Disappear is a soaring indie-electro-pop track that solidifies those past comparatives while looking forward into a unique future; the duo utilising the track as a "note to self" as they come out the other side of their hiatus on top.
"You want to take the first step, dive towards something new, but it's so easy being resistant to change. Sometimes almost drowning is what it takes for us to learn how to swim," the duo say on the track. It's a familiar feeling to anyone that has had to overcome a battle or something new, and something that feels particularly potent coming through PLGRMS after their last twelve months, and how the duo bring it to life through Disappear.
