Though they describe themselves as “lethargic and cathartic”, Plastic Cheeses – an alt rock/indie trio with members hailing from Naarm, the Otways, and the Surf Coast – are a force to be reckoned with on their latest single, And Then I Think About You.

Their first new track since the release of April’s You Need A Break… Mate, their latest effort is one that is becomes more relatable to listeners as they grow older and discover the way they experience life and its myriad highlights.

And Then I Think About You is a song written about how growing up and having different responsibilities and priorities in your life can affect how you experience what should be a joyous and carefree occasion,” explains songwriter Paul Doery.

“It’s a song about being in a strange headspace – a headspace where you feel guilty about enjoying yourself.”

With such a specific inspiration, one could assume its origins lie within a real world event. And indeed it does, with Doery writing the song about his own experiences at the 2017 Meredith Music Festival.

While typically a fun-filled event, the 2017 edition of the festival was the first time Doery found himself leaving his wife and nine-month-old child at home so that he could partake in a wild weekend of music, drinking and debauchery.

While the verses describe the fun and frivolity of the festival atmosphere, the chorus laments the distraction and guilt of thinking about the loved ones left at home.

With the tension between the two slowly rising, it reaches a crecendo in the bridge where Doery finds himself torn between wanting to do the right thing by his family but also wanting to enjoy this time apart by himself.

Plastic Cheeses will support the release of And Then I Think About You with a special release show on Saturday, January 18th as Mamma Chen's in Footscray. The free gig will see them supported by The Soggy Pockets, Kelsey Jean & The Bad Health, and The Wellingtons in duo format.

Plastic Cheeses’ And Then I Think About You is out now.
