PREMIERE: Miramar Break Through Modern Conformity With Cathartic New Single 'Sleepwalking'

Sydney-based band Miramar are set to unleash their frustrations with the mundane in their upcoming single Sleepwalking, scheduled for public release on August 2.

The song delves into the challenges faced during a quarter-life crisis with raw honesty and heavy intent, as the band aims to break free from arbitrary goals and empty dreams.

The idea for Sleepwalking was born nearly five years ago, during the band's university days when they found themselves caught in the cycle of all-nighters and intense dedication to degrees they despised.

“We had the initial idea for this song almost 5 years ago when we were still in university. We were doing regular all-nighters, working super hard on degrees we hated and not really understanding why,” Matthew Sampson said.

Vocalist Roisin Yau added, “The fact that this song has stuck with us all this time and still feels relevant to our lives really speaks to how constant the struggle is, whether you’re studying for a degree you don’t want, working overtime in a job you hate, or just generally allowing some pointless nonsense to control your life, we all feel that rage bubbling up at some point.”

Having evolved over the years, Sleepwalking has become a favourite among their fans who have experienced the band's immersive live shows.

The opening synths have been recognisable and the song's themes have resonated deeply with the audience. The inspiration for the final version came from Sam's sister, Naomi, who battles chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Her determination to attend all their shows, despite the toll it takes on her, pushed the band to infuse the track with darker and angrier tones.

“We started playing ‘Sleepwalking’ in our live sets back in 2021, but it was originally a bit slower with sadder chords. [My sister] Naomi has CFS but still comes to all our shows and dances her heart out, even though it knocks her out for days after,” Sam Langley explained.

“She heard the song at a show and loved the lyrics but made the point that being tired all the time is more frustrating than anything, so she suggested we try make it a bit more dark and angry-sounding. So we gave it a go and it felt instantly more connected to the feeling we were trying to capture.”

Sleepwalking boasts snarling synths and thumping grooves, reminiscent of iconic acts like The Chemical Brothers and The Presets. Yet, it also carries a cinematic drama comparable to Lastlings or RUFUS DU SOL.

Miramar is gearing up for the release of their debut EP later this year, and they have planned a series of shows along the East Coast to celebrate the launch of Sleepwalking.
