PREMIERE: Average Art Club - Sublime

Emergent Brisbane indie outfit Average Art Club underwent a bit of a reinvention this year, shuffling around their members in the wake of 2015's well-received debut EP to land on a new, more atmospheric dynamic as they unveil brand new single Sublime, proudly premiering on The Music today.

Recorded by Cody McWaters (Fresco, Kieran T Stevenson) and mastered by Dave Neal (WAAX, The Belligerents), Sublime comes following a busy period for the up-and-coming band, who have spent much of the past year cutting their teeth next to the likes of established contemporaries such as The Griswolds, Wafia, The John Steel Singers, Cub Sport, Ecca Vandal, WAAX and Banff.

The first new single since Holy Molly — which arrived back in February last year — Sublime was recorded with the input of new members Willow Nicholls (Switchblade Suzie), on guitar and vocals, and Tom Kinsella (The Con & The Liar) on synth. The wider song boasts gorgeous vocal harmonies and an evocative arrangement that keeps ears pricked and soul warm as the band weave their way through its sultry, jangly soundscape before the whole package picks up for a noticeably rockier, still-sweet-but-snarling outro.

The single's artwork comes courtesy of bassist Hannah Maddock, who, like her fellow Average Art Clubbers, is also an artist in her own right in addition to being a badass musician; she recently created a stunning painting of David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust for a charity tribute night at The Foundry earlier this year, which just sold for an undisclosed amount but will see all proceeds go to the Cancer Council Queensland.

Average Art Club will be hitting stages for a batch of headline shows in the near future, though details are yet to be announced. We'll let you know when those happen but, otherwise, keep your eyes peeled on the band's Facebook page for future updates.
