When you ask what the inspiration for a show is, a blunt answer of “pasta” isn’t exactly the answer you’d expect. But then again, when you ask what someone loves about Melbourne Fringe Festival, the answer “I have no time for love” isn’t either.
Phantom Panda Power Wizard Master Smasher (try saying that five times fast), are bringing their assortment of music that they describe as a mix of “jazz, rock and roll, heavy metal, folk, world, exotica and avant-garde” to Fringe this year, with a backdrop of the original Bugs Bunny cartoons.
“Fringe [Festival] chose us,” clarifies Starr Panda, a member of the 13-piece orchestra. “This music has been running through my brain for time immemorial. This is the curse of the Starr Panda. In order for a SpaceCutie to be allowed to play and interpret this music, we must first endure years of tortuous training in the isolated depths of space without pasta.” So what is that like? “Madness lies within. The process of learning and acquiring Earth technology has been a disgusting and soul destroying journey of tears…”
Never fear, though – they won’t kill you just yet. Rumour has it they’ve brought with them some smoke-machines and a bit of a light show – the SpaceCuties seem to have a bit more on their plate than just hunting for pasta.
“We are unbearably cute with such hot skills in music that to witness us perform is to risk the utter demolition of one’s sense of self… Strangely, music, which is the most sought after commodity in the PandaGalaxy is not valued here at all. Humans are weird.”
Sounds like someone needs a good spag-bol.
