More Kingswood More Kingswood

As Kingswood ready themselves to release their forthcoming Claptrap documentary, they’ve had some time to reflect on just what it’s like to take part in a mammoth trek on the road.

Set for release on April 4th with a premiere at Melbourne’s Astor Theatre, Claptrap captures the band on their record-setting live venture, where they embarked on a 112-date tour of Australia across six months. Last year’s Hometowns tour saw Kingswood perform to over 60,000 fans following the release of their sixth album, Home.

While the tour sounds amazing on paper, there’s no question that it was relentless. It brought the band closer together, but it also pushed them into visceral emotional territory. It was the kind of tour that had to be recorded and displayed to future generations of bands.

But with the band themselves getting ready to hit the road for a few screenings as part of Claptrap’s roll-out around the country, they were kind enough to take a few moments to reflect on just what it’s like to be performing live as part of the biggest tour the country has ever seen.

While there’s plenty of highlights (not necessarily glitz and glamour) involved in a tour of such magnitude, there’s also the lowlights, where things can go wrong and it’s unclear if the show will even take place. But throughout it all, there’s still a few moments that float to the surface and colour their memories when looking back on the massive experiment.

We’ll leave it to Kingswood to share their favourite moments from Australia's longest tour on record:

3. The Great Bus Break Down Of Tamworth

It wasn’t great, it was tough, what’s remarkable is the only focus we had was our show in Tamworth that night, and how we could get there and play.

We gathered some of our things not knowing when we’d see Peggy again, hailed a taxi, to a bus depot, and got to Tamworth and on stage with minutes to spare. Despite the many negatives it was a day that tested and united us.

2. Three Days Off In Bermagui

After meeting a wonderful group of people at a winery show, they convinced us to travel back down south to Bermagui for our three days off.

During tour stay we swam in rockpools and secret beaches, had a bonfire on a farm, and on the last night we played in a garage at a house party. They are all still great friends today.

1. The 100th Show

Well, I think it was the 113th show, but I’m talking about the end, after six months away from home we returned to the Corner Hotel in Melbourne, surrounded by friends and family.

That’s when it sunk in, this ridiculous barstool idea that became a unique life experience, bussing around Australia non stop, playing town to town in pubs, breweries, wineries, theatres, town halls, at festivals, and even people backyard sheds. We made incredible memories and friends along the way.

After that last show, I could have slept for weeks, but instead we headed to Europe for two more months of madness. We haven’t really stopped touring since, call it Stockholm syndrome.
