"At times we were twisting knobs on pedals and guitars left, right and centre to get some of the sounds that we wanted."
Jack & The Kids have enjoyed triple j success, picked as the Groovin The Moo triple j Unearthed competition winners. The four-piece from Bendigo, Victoria, have also supported the likes of Snakadaktal, The Kite String Tangle, Abbe May and Jakubi. They released their single Real Again in March this year, with Aaron Dobos (British India, Ceres, Self Talk) on production. "In February this year he came up to Bendigo for a weekend and we recorded it partly at our drummer's home studio, and then went to Melbourne's Sing Sing Studios a week later to finish the song off," says Jack Kennedy.
"The song was inspired by my mother's and our bass player's battle with cancer throughout 2015. From a musical point of view, it was really inspiring working with Aaron. I really wanted to stretch my vocal range has far as possible and I felt I did that." Despite the intense emotions connected to Real Again, Kennedy always made sure he felt fresh for recording. "If things aren't working for whatever reason, just throw that instrument back in its case and start over with a fresh mind another day. I find by doing this, you might think of a better/different way to get the part down and it will probably end up being better."
"We probably went for more feeling and vibe with this one, but I guess there is always going to be that perfection side of things. [For] example, at times we were twisting knobs on pedals and guitars left, right and centre to get some of the sounds that we wanted," says Kennedy.
