Brisbane-based singer-songwriter Jordan Merrick is no stranger to local audiences, having won them over as part of blues-rock crew Fugitive & The Vagabond, and now he's stretching his wings into solo territory with his gorgeous new collection of songs, In Colour.
Sporting five tracks of Americana-steeped bush balladry, In Colour is a mature and moreish throwback to days long gone by, as evidenced by previously released singles Untitled #1 and You Gotta Go. Merrick's compositions are tightly arranged and lyrically rich, giving ample room to both his dexterously picked guitar lines — along with occasional other instrumentation, such as Workin' Man's Blues gentle piano — and warm, inviting vocals.
It's an anachronistic yet essentially timeless sound that Merrick has crafted for himself, and the sum of its parts amounts to an exceptional, and exceptionally enjoyable, debut outing for the poet-cum-troubadour.
