Universities are rapidly losing their place as the bastions of creative thought and artistic endeavour as they make way for the rise of TAFEs, the new meccas of creativity. Those who are serious about expressing themselves for a living are flocking to the TAFE sector.

Amongst the crowd, Kangan Institute and Bendigo TAFE have been at the forefront in creating hands-on learning environments for its students, investing heavily in building the right atmosphere, industry partnerships and support services ideal for learning and finding employment.

Picture naturally lit, open workshops bustling with like-minded individuals using their talents and feeding off each other’s positive vibes. Think about one-on-one, personalised support as you learn from some of the industry’s best educators. That’s what these institutes are all about. And in doing so they’ve produced some of Victoria’s finest creative talents.

Young artist Fatai Veamatahau is just one example – the music graduate wowed the nation as a finalist on Channel 9’s The Voice and is now signed on with Mercury Records Australia. Kangan Institute’s hands-on music program was her stepping stone. With an emphasis on performance and growth as independent musicians, music students have access to a performing space and recording studio. They are taught composition, music business and technology, using industry standard recording system, Pro Tools, to record, mix and master original music.

Kangan Institute’s Centre for Fashion and Creative Industries is a boutique campus located a short stroll from Richmond train station. Students enjoy the latest digital technologies in a space that also houses runway facilities, retail training spaces, a textile manufacturing hub and a hair and beauty training salon. The campus has cultivated many successful fashion designers, stylists and visual merchandisers thanks to the industry-related projects they can work on during their course with big brands like MYER, TS14, Frankie and Swiss, Zachary and others.

Taking creative learning to new heights is Bendigo TAFE, with its professional Lotus Hair and Beauty training facility specialising in facials, massage, manicures and pedicures, professional hair styling and make up to give students real world experience.

Kangan Institute and Bendigo TAFE will be having open days at their campuses throughout August featuring demos and info sessions for music, fashion, hair and beauty courses, so come down and see what all the fuss is about.
