Album Focus: Forenzics

Answered by: Dirk Kruithof

Album title? Malign

Where did the title of your new album come from? The title was concocted over a few beers between myself and Matt Syres (also guitar). We needed something connected to the cinematic dark mood of the recording. Malign fit the bill perfectly. Thriller was taken.

How many releases do you have now? Malign is our fourth album. It’s our best yet. H30, Static And Silence, Build Ruins, and now Malign.

How long did it take to write/record? It took one day of recording at Jungle Studios in Annandale. It’s 100% improvised music, no written parts or edits, so it was all created spontaneously then and there.

Was anything in particular inspiring you during the making? We were conscious of listening closely and responding to what each other was playing – and leaving space. Ideally I will get inspired in the moment by what sounds the others are making.

What’s your favourite song on it? Stone Cold Crazies. It’s a long, slow-moving piece.

Will you do anything differently next time? Same approach, different sounds.

When and where is your launch/next gig? 3 Mar, 1/4 Inch, Rad Bar, Wollongong; 6 Mar, The Record Crate, Glebe.
