Q & A: The Liberators

Afrobeat funk-soul fusionists The Liberators talk music and culture ahead of their performance for World Music Wednesdays.

Name: Nathan Aust.

What the best venue – anywhere in the world – you've played? We've had two gigs that are tie for first place. The Basement with Russ Dewbury "Night at the Jazz Rooms". The place was rocking. Closing Peats Ridge with members of the Dapkings joining us.

Is there one country you particularly love performing in? We've only played in Australia at this point! European tour under negotiation.

What part of the world has had the most influence on you, musically? 1960s Nigeria, Ghana and the USA.

Where have you experienced music really impacting and influencing a culture? We weren't there but the USA, UK, Nigeria, Jamaica.

When it comes to your band – is more always better? We are a 10 piece, but have on occasions had extra percussionists join us, adding to the rhythm layers.

What's one instrument you wish you could master? Piano.

Do you have any pre-gig rituals? Ring around to see where all the horns are.

What's your favourite food dish? Ceviche - Peruvian style fish cooked chemically in lime, onion and chilli.

Can you recommend us a drink at the bar? Going to be boring and say beer. But also a nice single malt whiskey.
