The Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist's debut album is out today..
10 December selections from our resident intern - Liam Apter.. Liam Apter is the current editorial intern at the Pilerats office in Perth. I've previously worked at adamNOTeve, Music Feeds, The Brag and I run my own blog which the Guardian picked up last year and chose as blog of the week. I've also covered some of Australia's biggest festivals including Laneway, Listen Out and Splendour In The Grass at the ripe age of eighteen. I've got a keen passion for just about anything except hardcore and dubstep. 1. Young Fathers (pictured) - Soon Come Soon Young Fathers came to my attention at the beginning of the year through Elizabeth Rose posting about their then new album Dead which went onto later win the Mercury Prize in the UK. Live these guys are a powerhouse, with their drummer snapping sticks throughout the show and denting them cymbals from his force. And that's before you get to the energy of the rest of the group, it's hypnotic. And while Soon Come Soon isn't the vicious sonic ho
A sublime collection of beats from the Melbourne producer.. We've been feverishly anticipating Thrupence's Lessons Mixtape 4 since he dropped his first tune with Future Classic last August in Don't You Mind. And he hasn't disappointed. I could lazily apply an Avalanches-esque descriptor to his sound (and I just did), but there's also a lot more to it that makes Thrupence one of the most interesting and unique producers in a very busy Australian scene. You can stream Lessons below, or buy it for the paltry sum of $7 via Thrupence's BANDCAMP. Money well spent:
With the quality of people involved, it's no surprise this is a gorgeous tune.. We first came across Brisbane artist Wafia when she guest vocalled on recent Triple J Unearthed winner and perennial Pilerats fave Japanese Wallpaper's 2013 single Breathe In (listen HERE). We've been waiting with bated breath for whatever comes next, and today we are incredibly happy to report she has not disappointed. With plans to release her second EP in the near future, we get our first taste in the form of this slinky cover of Mario's huge 2004 tune Let Me Love You. Produced by Future Classic's new blood Thrupence (listen to Don't You Mind HERE), and mastered by producer-to-the-stars Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Oscar Key Sung), it's quite simply - a fucking jam. Stream it below, and have a great day. Follow Wafia: FACEBOOK // SOUNDCLOUD
Future Classic's newest signing is off to a flyer with Don't You Mind.. Two years after causing a Bandcamp meltdown with his independent EP release Voyages, Melbourne producer Thrupence has dropped a new single in Don't You Mind, which also doubles as his official introduction to the Future Classic family. It's not hard to see why - Don't You Mind is a breath of fresh air in our future-beat/Australian sound world - cinematic, ambient vibes infused with lazy yet compelling hip hop beats, and a sultry vocal sample from blues singer Bon House. First it reminded me of Pogo and the Avalanches, but it very quickly becomes its own beast - and a supremely dope one at that. It's the first track from the 23-year-old's upcoming full-length release, Lessons, set to drop on September 26 via FC. We can't wait, and until then this will remain on repeat as it has done the past few days: Follow Thrupence on FACEBOOK // SOUNDCLOUD // BANDCAMP
