Live Review: Timberwolf, The Pierce Brothers, Ben Whiting

23 December 2014 | 1:25 pm | Naomi Keyte

Timberwolf doesn’t disappoint his home crowd in Adelaide.

More Timberwolf More Timberwolf

The final date of a hugely successful single tour and a home crowd made Jive one busy venue on Friday night.

The first of the handpicked supports was Melburnian Ben Whiting, who possesses an enviable vocal range and a delicate, percussive guitar technique, with vocal motifs similar to Matt Corby. He was a beautiful opener.

The Pierce Brothers aren’t just brothers, they’re twins; which kind of helps you understand how and why they do what they do. Probably the most energetic duo this reviewer has ever seen, these two thrashed out on foot drums, played guitars and sang their hearts out, all at the same time. The songs themselves were a little indistinct but the energy those boys threw into them makes them engaging.

Timberwolf has come so far in the last 18 months, from playing intimate shows in Adelaide to touring with a full band. With his nearest and dearest at arm’s reach, this show was a real celebration. His sound has evolved from folk pop to a more rock’n’roll sound. Now on electric guitar, his former style has been replaced by bluesy rock licks. The band was tight and looked pleased as punch to be on stage together doing what they love. Unfortunately the mix was a little muddy and at times it was almost impossible to hear the keys. Thankfully, the issue was resolved when Timberwolf played a choice Aussie cover, GANGgajang’s Sounds Of Then, which shifted the night into another gear. Backing vocalist Maggie Rutjens added something lovely with her subtle vocal lines and classic percussion parts. Timberwolf doesn’t disappoint and it was nice to see Adelaide folk supporting Adelaide art.
