A full house at The School Of Life’s first music-related event.
It’s a full house at The School Of Life’s first music-related event. Craig Schuftan (ARIA award-winning author/broadcaster/radio producer) wins the audience over early into his “lecture on disco” by sharing the title of his second book, Hey! Nietzsche! Leave Them Kids Alone! (Badum-tish!) And then when he announces his intention to put “the discourse back into disco” there are further titters. If you tuned into The Culture Club on triple j, Schuftan’s informative talk tonight is structured in much the same way with a synchronised soundtrack that enables timely splices of disco classics to punctuate his points. Schuftan discusses the fact that songs usually fall into two categories: they either make you think or forget your troubles. (He’s fairly certain disco tracks all fall into the latter category.)
After Schuftan responds to the question poised within The Jacksons’ Can You Feel It chorus lyrics with a resounding yes, we are encouraged to help move the chairs aside and bust a move well into the night. CC: DISCO takes control of the decks and tapas platters are brought in. Then, during a powder room visit, a couple of ladies are witnessed pulling foil wigs out of their handbags to place onto their heads in preparation for a dancefloor invasion – Good Times (thanks, Chic).
