Crafting music from an assortment of sounds and influences, Brooklyn based beat maker THE RANGE has created his latest instalment, ‘Florida’ as an intriguing taster for both an upcoming album, and music documentary release.
Titling the album Potential, it draws inspiration from early 00’s grime, mid 00’s electronica and Baltimore club sounds. James Hinton, AKA The Range has also taken inspiration from a rather sad, but pertinent point: he is a member “of the last generation that will remember going online for the first time”. With this in mind he has travelled to some weird, wonderful and dark places on YouTube to locate vocal samples for the album.
‘Florida’ showcases this formula; it covers a range (pun intended) of sounds from oriental, to Caribbean. It feels both warm and wistful. In some ways you could say it captures the essence of Florida, a place where people go to either adventure, or retire. It’s the kind of track you can listen to on a warm day as you are cruising around, or on a gloomy day when you want to remember the glory years.

The Range has musical talents, with a background in guitar and drums, however his primary instrument is his computer. His ability to find and draw together samples to create his amazing sounds led to Daniel Kaufman’s documentary ‘Superimpose’, which focuses on the singers behind the samples. The doco will be released March 18, ahead of the March 25th release of Potential.
