Mick HarveyThis is the fourth volume of the former Bad Seed's ongoing celebration and investigation of that most Gallic of pop musicians, the supremely dissolute and cigarette-dangling Serge Gainsbourg.
As the title suggests, this one concentrates on the Frenchman's sometimes-questionable dealings with the opposite sex — from cryptic romanticism to sleazy disregard. Harvey has his own little black book of female guest vocalists to provide an often-required other voice, including locals such as Jess Ribeiro and Sophia Brous. He also puts a different spin on a few things, notably taking Gainsbourg's best-known piece, the breathy soft porn of Je T'aime, outside his homeland and having it delivered in German just to confuse the issue.
