"Not a stunning debut, but the passion is there"

More July Talk More July Talk

Forming in 2012, July Talk have had a pretty rapid rise up the Canadian indie-rock ladder, supported Billy Talent, Weezer and more. Their debut album proves why.

Peter Dreimanis is Tom Waits in another body. Take that as you will. It works, coupled with Leah Fay’s Quebecois lilt, while the pounding blues-rock that covers the album keeps the energy flowing. It does get bogged down in heavy blues riffs at times, but then tracks like Headspin and Don’t Call Home throw up moments of near-perfect pop clarity. Not a stunning debut, but the passion is there.
