"The fear and angst in her lyrics is offset by the power of such brutal self-reflection."
In For Evelyn, Hannah Georgas has hit the midpoint between her tough chick attitude from The Beat Stuff EP and the melancholic fragility of her self-titled album.
The fear and angst in her lyrics is offset by the power of the brutal self-reflection that shines brightest on Waste and Don't Go. By the time you get to Lost Cause, all that questioning becomes a bit whiny: "I feel like I'm a lost cause/Life could be so sweet if I knew how to change." You're either going to love or hate the arrangement: classical piano and beautifully raw vocals interspersed with mechanical '80s synths which, though jarring at times, definitely piques interest. It's not easy listening, but it doesn't try to be.
