Black Mass

StarStarStarStar

"Depp owns the role and even manages to sprinkle some layered humanity within the malevolence."

Johnny Depp is known for striking characters, but has struggled for a few years to deliver a solid performance behind the makeup. Black Mass allows him to shine again.

Black Mass is the true story of ruthless Boston gangster and FBI informant James 'Whitey' Bulger (Johnny Depp) and his rise to power with the help of a protective informant deal with FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton).

Directed by Scott Cooper, this is a solid gangster film that is grim, unforgiving and, at points, disturbing. Its focus varies between the large ensemble, giving many personal points of view on Bulger's story, which works to add scope but loosens the film's structure. Cooper excels primarily in scenes of tension, which are slow, calculated and unfold beautifully (see the steak scene, or when Bulger visits Mrs Connolly).

Depp's Bulger is a truly vile creation; from the first frame it's clear that Bulger is evil to be reckoned with, and Depp (in haunting makeup and piercing blue contacts) owns the role and even manages to sprinkle some layered humanity within the malevolence. An expansive all-star ensemble aids him, all of whom impressively hold their own. The best served is Edgerton, whose jittery, challenged performance is a highlight.

Black Mass is a fascinating film, unique in its focus and excellent performances.
