It comes just shy of 40 years since the classic tune first hit the airwaves.

More Wham! More Wham!

39 years after it first hit the airwaves, Wham!’s 1984 classic Last Christmas finally earned the Christmas #1 on the UK Single Chart.

According to Billboard, the song was played 13.3 million times during the seven-day chart cycle dated December 22, making it the most-streamed Christmas #1. But although it’s the first time Wham! have hit the coveted milestone, it’s not the #1 chart debut for Last Christmas. The track itself went #1 for the first time in 2021, and returned to the top of the charts last year.

Last year, a London couple became so fed up with Last Christmas dominating the airwaves, they launched a crowdfunding campaign to buy the song’s rights and permanently ban it from the radio... Suffice to say, they were unsuccessful in their mission, for better or worse.

At the time of writing, the official music video for Last Christmas holds a monumental 875 million views, while on Spotify it’s racked up some 1.46 billion streams.
