The InternetGrand Theft Auto machinima — specifically, music-video machinima — is nothing new. In fact, even the most cursory look at YouTube will yield a raft of fan-made clips for their favourite songs, from The Chain Gang Of 1974's Sleepwalking to Dr Dre's Still Dre, Eminem's Beserk and Dan Croll's From Nowhere — and that's just for the most recent game.
Despite the genre's proliferation, however, neon-bright '80s synth-wave British outfit Gunship — a side project involving Alex Westaway of Fightstar renown — have released what they claim (and nobody has yet disputed) to be the first official music video created entirely within Grand Theft Auto V's Director Mode and Rockstar Editor, which allow users immense cinematographic flexibility to craft unique narratives and shots that go well beyond what's available in the default game. So far, the tool is only available on PC, but it's due to hit PS4 and Xbox One consoles later this year.
The clip was constructed by veteran Director Mode machinima artist 8-bit Bastard, and celebrates the band's new single The Mountain. It's the second single to be taken from Gunship's forthcoming debut studio full-length, which drops on Friday, 24 July, internationally.
Granted, the clip's slick aesthetic feels more in line with GTA: Vice City than V, but it's too good a clip to nitpick like that. Check out the video — which evokes The Terminator, Blade Runner and every 1980s coke fantasy you've ever had — below, and check out Gunship's broader business at their website.
